Historic Paramaribo
The conference unfolds in a city unlike any other in the Caribbean. Paramaribo’s historic inner city is one of the world’s best-preserved examples of Dutch colonial town planning, with graceful 17th- and 18th-century wooden buildings, broad tree-lined avenues, and landmarks like Fort Zeelandia still standing watch over the Suriname River.
What began as a small 17th-century trading settlement grew into the administrative center of Dutch Suriname, then the capital of an independent nation — shaped along the way by African, Indigenous, Indian, Javanese, Chinese, and European influences. That multicultural character earned the city its UNESCO World Heritage designation in 2002.

Step outside the city and the scenery changes completely. The Central Suriname Nature Reserve — itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site — protects pristine forest, granite mountains, and rivers, home to jaguars, giant river otters, harpy eagles, and eight species of monkey.
